Apologies for not updating this blog, life has gotten very busy in the last few months, both at work and at home. I have decided to leave this blog as it is but all new WSM posts will now be on my main website over at thefable.co.uk/ which is where you will find my latest post: World’s Strongest Man 2011 Groups and My Predictions – see you there!

Yes, you did read that title correctly – 1998 World’s Strongest Man champion, Magnus Samuelsson, will be debuting at Rally Sweden in February.

After reaching a record breaking 14 World’s Strongest Man finals, Magnus announced he would retire from Strongman competitions after the World’s Strongest Man 2008. A long time rally fan, Magnus decided to take on the world’s best and enter WRC.

Interviewed over at the WRC website, Magnus had this to say:

This is a boyhood dream come true,” said Samuelsson. “Just the thought to be on the starting line in the same competition as Sebastien Loeb and the other stars is breathtaking.

“I’ve competed a lot with Folkrace, but this is obviously something completely different and new for me. I’m looking forward to getting the rally started, but before that I need to find a race-suit that will fit around my neck,” he added.

I do miss Magnus in the 2009 World’s Strongest Man, he was always such a great personality and a relentless competitor. However, I’ll be keeping an eye on his progress in WRC and hoping he’s as successful driving a car as he was carrying one!

As a parting bit of trivia, Magnus broke pro wrestler and actor Nathan Jones’s arm years ago in a professional arm-wrestling competition.

Not content with being the winningest World’s Strongest Man of all time, 5 time Champion Mariusz Pudzianowski debuted as a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter in his native Poland at KSW XII on December 11th 2009. His opponent was professional boxer Marcin Najman.

The title of this blog post gives the result away, but do yourself a favour and watch the fight for yourself – it won’t take up much of your time. Could there be a future for Pudzianowsli in MMA? Imagine Pudzianowski taking on Brock Lesnar or Fedor Emelianenko!

Beating the record of 4 World’s Strongest Man titles held by Jón Páll Sigmarsson and Magnús Ver Magnússon, Mariusz Pudzianowski won the 2008 World’s Strongest Man to get his record breaking 5th title.

As amazing as The Dominator’s record was, and it really was, one other story came out of the competition and that is Derek Poundstone, as seen pictured above. The 2008 competition was his first World’s Strongest Man and he led the competition up until the last event where Pudzianowski beat him in the Atlas Stones. What makes Poundstone’s success even more phenomenal is that he only does it part time – his full time job is that of a police officer for the Naugatuck, Connecticut Police Department!

Expect the 2009 competition to be one that Derek Poundstone will not want to lose!

A special mention goes to Magnus Samuelson from Sweden – winner of the 1998 World’s Strongest Man and a 13 year veteran of the competition, announced his retirement from World’s Strongest Man. Once the best Arm Wrestler in Europe, Samuelson famously broke the arm of professional wrestler and actor Nathan Jones in an arm wrestling match.

For as long as I can remember, watching World’s Strongest Man has been a Christmas/New Year viewing tradition. Back in the 80s it was all about Geoff Capes, Bill Kazmaier and the mighty Jón Páll Sigmarsson (God rest his soul).

The 90s saw the rise of Magnús Ver Magnússon and the 2000s saw the meteoric rise of The Dominator, Marius Pudzianowski – the powerhouse from Poland who has won 4 of the last 5 competitions.

I am half Polish by my Grandparents on my Mum’s side so I can follow Marius that way. My British nationality has me wanting to support the British guys, especially big Terry Hollands who came an impressive 3rd last year.

Whatever the results, it’s bound to be an impressive display of power from the mightiest men on earth – qualifiers start tonight!
