There was a time when I would sit at home, usually in the cold and dark, and just hope that one day my prayers would be answered and someone would put The World’s Strongest Man events on DVD. Part of this came to fruition when the awesome Worlds Strongest Man – Thirty Years Of Pain DVD was released last year – I reviewed that here.

Well now they’ve gone one better and have released these beauties:

WSM Decades DVDs

That’s Worlds Strongest Man Decades 80’s DVD and The Worlds Strongest Man Decades 90’s DVD – awesome! That means all those amazing battles from the 80s involving Bill Kazmaier, Geoff Capes and Jón Páll Sigmarsson as well as those superhuman guys from the 90s like Magnus ver Magnusson, Jouko Ahola and well Jón Páll Sigmarsson again, just, can all be seen again, in these awesome DVD sets. Each one contains 10 World’s Strongest Man finals, in their entirety – that’s 9 hours of footage per set!

To say that I am excited is an understatement, and these sets have been on my Amazon wish list since I found out about them late last year. Now they are in stock I will just wait until the snow eases up before I order mine, and then I’ll be taking a week off work to watch them, back to back with no sleep – now that’s Viking Power! Let’s just hope that a 00’s (doesn’t that look strange!) Decades set is coming soon.

Ever since I was a little boy I used to watch The World’s Strongest Man (WSM) with my Dad as an annual tradition around Christmas/New Year. I started as a Geoff Capes fan and cheered him in his battles against the mighty Bill Kazmaier and Jon Pall Sigmarsson (Viking Power!). In the mid 90s I was a fan of Manfred Hoeberl and his freakishly large arms, though it was Magnus Ver Magnusson who dominated that decade! In the 2000s I relied on my half Polish bloodline to get behind `The Dominator’ Mariusz Pudzianowski who has just last year broken the previous record of 4 WSM wins (set by Icelanders Jon Pall Sigmarsson and Magnus Ver Magnusson) to become the only man to ever win 5 WSM competitions, and there may be more to come!

After the latest WSM I scoured the internet for DVDs, but found none 😦 You can imagine my delight when I found this Worlds Strongest Man – Thirty Years Of Pain DVD and promptly pre-ordered it. The `30 Years of Pain’ documentary is a look back at the history of WSM and the extraordinary competitors involved. I’ve watched it twice already – back to back! As a longtime fan of WSM I found it utterly fascinating. While I consider myself somewhat of a WSM aficionado, this DVD contains a bunch of stuff I have never seen and some of it is very moving, showing that the world of Strongman is not just about bulging biceps.

The making of WSM is very interesting and shows the amount of work and preparation that goes into putting on an event like World’s Strongest man – it’s not just a case of getting some big guys together and a few heavy objects for them to lift!

I can’t recommend this DVD enough, I’d lend it to my Dad but I know I’ll never get it back so I’ll buy him his own copy for his birthday in October!

There’s also a chance to win a trip to the 2009 WSM finals, which we now know are being held in Malta, thanks to the World’s Strongest Man website. Information on dates from the website:

Qualifying rounds will be held between 26th and 29th of September, with the Finals being held from the 1st to 3rd of October

Apparently a new website is coming soon, looking forward to it!

My tip for 2009 is Derek Poundstone – you heard it here first, maybe!

First off, apologies for the lack of posts – the Formula 1 season started and I decided to start a new blog for that as Formula 1 posts were taking over at A Little Less Geek. Unfortunately I got so wrapped up in the new blog (McLaren Fan Blog) that I neglected this one! To make matters worse I have just started a 3rd blog which can be seen here: The Beach Boys Discography Project. I promise, more posts on Less Geek from now on though – so much going on so it’d be rude not to!

Around the time of the latest WSM they showed a documentary on TV called ’30 Years of Pain’ which was a look back at the history of WSM and the extraordinary competitors involved. I’ve watched it 3 times so far, as a longtime fan of WSM I found it utterly fascinating. Just yesterday I was pointed in the direction of the trailer for what I know now is the DVD of the aforementioned documentary, with extra bonus footage that I didn’t see on TV, AND the making of World’s Strongest Man! Go back to January and I was trawling Amazon looking for WSM DVDs so news of this DVD is awesome news for me, and any WSM fans out there! It’ll be out on June 1st according to the trailer, so not long to wait. I’ll be picking one up for both my Dad and myself – nostalgia central! I just hope there are more WSM DVDs to come.

Here is said trailer on Youtube:
