I’ve been a fan of World’s Strongest Man for about 30 years – it used to be a Christmas / New Year tradition for me and my Dad, and it’s one that I hope to share with my son in years to come. Back then I was amazed by the strength of such men as Geoff Capes, Bill Kazmaier and Jón Páll Sigmarsson.
I remember being stunned at the size of the arms of Manfred Hoeberl, and until just the other day had it in my head that he’d passed away – thank goodness I was proven wrong. This was in the same era as Magnus ver Magnusson, who while not having the chiselled physique of someone like Hoeberl or Sigmarsson, seemed to have everything it took be a success in World’s Strongest Man. His 4 wins would attest to that!
Onto the modern era and there’s no looking past 5 time winner Mariusz Pudzianowski, a true phenom in World’s Strongest Man and a firm candidate for the accolade of greatest world’s Strongest Man Ever! With an influx of new blood from America like Travis Ortmayer, Brian Shaw and Poundstone, plus Brits such as Terry Hollands and Laurance Shahlaei, the future is looking great, or even strong!
This blog was born out of too many posts on my personal blog being about World’s Strongest Man, it needed its own home, and so The 5th Stone (taken from the heaviest of the 5 Atlas Stones – the last event in a World’s Strongest Man competition) came to being.
I have to admit that outside of World’s Strongest Man and Britain’s Strongest Man I haven’t seen much of the other Strongman competitions, though I really want to. If you know of, or involved in any kind of Strongman event then please contact me so I can talk about the event on here and if possible I’d love to attend the event and cover it for this blog. I’ll happily plug any upcoming shows – you just need to give me any information fans will need.
I am always interested to hear from other World’s Strongest Man fans so please comment and let me know what you think. If you’ve ever competed in World’s Strongest Man, if you are an aspiring Strongman or have anything at all to do with World’s Strongest Man, UK’s Strongest Man, Britain’s Strongest Man, America’s Strongest Man and other strongman competitions, then I’d love to email you a few questions, an interview if you like! You can email me at wsmstones@googlemail.com for any questions or opportunities.

I too have been a huge WSM fan all my life and it was also a tradition over the Christmas holidays to watch the competition. After far too many years away from it I have returned to training again – love it. It’s only when you push yourself week in, week out under those weights that you really apperciate quite how awesome these guys are!!! This is the first year my son has really got into to it with me. (He’s 13) I think you have started an awesome thing here! Will add more comments later! Right now I have a staircase to finish painting with a dodgy shoulder I completely mullered doing military presses earlier!!!

Hi Kati
Thanks for your comments and welcome back the crazy world of WSM! My son is only 21 months but I am hoping he’ll enjoy watching with me – right now he’s more interested in Roary the Racing Car!
Good luck with the staircase – I have a fence to mend this weekend – fun times!
